Kitchen Reno Part I

It's time!

I'm not a big cook. I'm not too fussy when it comes to kitchens. But I am a clean freak and this kitchen drives me nuts when it's time to clean up. So many little crevices and crusty surfaces that are hard to tell whether they're clean. My goal here is to update the room so it's clean and bright.

The room is a decent size with lots of cabinets running along two walls. Plenty of storage. My friend bashed out the soffits, but I'm not that brave. The light fixture and appliances are fine. Cabinets are in okay shape. The floor is decent. The previous owners installed it the week they put the place on the market. Not really my style, but it's not really worth it to change it all out.

I'm motivated this week, so I scrubbed out all the cabinets and reorganized them. How much junk accumulates in just a few years. I even installed some organizers in the pantry and it already feels new and orderly.

I pulled down a bit of wallpaper just to see what condition it was in. Would it be super glued onto the wall like the stuff in my daughter's room? No problem. Hot water took it right off in about 45 minutes. That was yesterday.

Today I patched the walls and started yanking out the countertop caulk. It's like cement. 22 years old. Yikes.

Next up, I'll paint and order the countertop, sink, backsplash tile, and dishwasher. Wish me luck.

Here's a closeup of that grubby little time capsule.
